I am the bomb builder’s daughter

My Dad was the unknown, unseen construction engineer in charge of the bombs and weapons of mass destruction created in the USA between 1945 and 1969 ( at least 131 nuclear tests). You’ve never heard of my Dad; his top-secret clearance was higher than Oppenheimer’s, and the US Government burned all his records. The only reason he stopped building and testing bombs was because of the international moratorium on testing nuclear weapons.

This thread is about my story—bits and pieces of my journey, explaining my past and the effects of nuclear radiation on my body, soul, and life.

I’m the little one in the above photo; I’m 4. I’m now 80 in the other photo.

This is the first post about growing up in a household dedicated to annihilating masses of people, destroying the environment, and spreading nuclear radiation around the globe.

What is the mindset of a man whose joy in life is watching bombs explode and figuring out how to keep expanding the range of nuclear destruction while spending the least amount of money?

The Setting

I am the first person born on Earth with weapons-grade plutonium 239 toxicity that runs through every cell, fiber, and aspect of my body. Now, almost everyone born on Earth is contaminated with plutonium radiation, which has a half-life of 24,100 years. Plus, people now have multiple layers of other man-made toxins, pollutants, and poisons.

Oppenheimer taught my Dad and three other men, in private classes at UCLA, the physics equations created by Einstein, Fermi, and all the other great physicists from Los Alamos.

Every time they needed to create the 3-D physical experiment, nuclear device, or fuel to explode the bombs, my Dad was called in to do the 3-D creation. He’s the one who created Lawrence Livermore Labs, Jet Propulsion Lab atom smashers, and Hanford, the facility that creates weapons-grade plutonium 239.

When I was a kid, he was the world leader in nuclear warfare. Of course, there were men above him, but he’s the one who did the 3-D work. He was the only man who knew how to create weapons-grade plutonium 239, the fuel for the hydrogen bomb. And he was also the only man on Earth who knew how to design and build a hydrogen bomb. He did the entire process, from start to finish, from energy to explosion, from an idea in his head to a blueprint on paper, to negotiating all the supplies, running the facility in the South Pacific and Nevada test sites. Down to where the placement of every screw, every rivet and bolt. It was his design. He then oversaw the explosion, and immediately came home.

His next step was to chart the destruction of the explosions and see how to expand the circle of annihilation and destruction while reducing the costs. His mind was the only mind that could function to create the world’s first hydrogen bomb. And he created all of the USA bombs, not just the H-bomb.

Hiding in Plain Sight

Our life was filled with the energy of weapons of mass destruction. The coffee table had maps of bomb explosions with rings of how far out the destruction went. His goal was to see how to increase the amount of destruction while decreasing the cost. At least back then, plutonium was very expensive to make.

We lived a top-secret life in the middle of suburbia. No gated community, no police escort. We were much more hidden than that. We were the perfect family, wife and two kids, members of the Country Club. We passed the external prerequisites for a man in my father’s position. We were the façade, the display objects that hid the violence and depth of destruction that lived in our house.

My family had an overlay of presenting ourselves to the world in the most up-to-date, stylish fashion, to hide the intensity of death and destruction that went on inside our house. From age 4, I lied about what my father did. I’d say construction engineer, and people would envision a big building.

Mom, my sister, and I were the cardboard puppets. We had to look the right way, wear the right clothes, have the right hairstyles, and be quiet. Shut up, never say one word, ever—that could blow the whole cover. Someone would find out that my Dad built bombs. We would be hunted down. This was the McCarthy era. There were commies around every corner. Everybody was spying on their neighbors. No one was to be trusted. If we stepped out of line in the slightest way, we would be found out.

I used to play with paper dolls. Cut-out, cardboard girls. Paper dresses and little tabs that fold over the cardboard girl. The whole thing would fall apart in about a second, but we were supposed to be happy. That’s what life felt like, a cardboard representation of who I was supposed to be.

White fluffy clouds surround our DNA, carrying imposed programming to keep people small, subservient, and suffering.
